New Drawings on Etsy

"is this happiness?"
"where do I belong?"
"upswing"
"strange connection"

Well, these drawings aren't really new. I just kind of forgot about them. I got out my sketchbook tonight and there they were. I did them a while ago, maybe when I was doing my daily drawings...anyway, here they are.

We've been having a wonderful, snowy (and snotty) holiday week. We got Sam a drum set for xmas and it's been wonderful to see him go to town. Also, pretty painful on our poor eardrums. (Toddler Protective Earmuffs are on their way from Amazon!)

I'm also obsessed with Coconut Records which is Jason Schwartzman's band. This was a gift from my hubby and it is fantastic. I cannot stop listening to it.

The drawings are available at my Etsy shop.

Happy New Year!!

We've been blasted with snow today. I love it! We have about 6 inches now but are expected to get around 8". It's so nice to stay inside all toasty warm and look out at the beautiful snow. So glad we don't have to go out again. Let's hope it lasts until Christmas!

This is really exciting for me. For the first time ever I have painted mini paintings (2 1/2" x 2 1/2"). They are painted on both sides and are tied with a ribbon so they can also be used as ornaments. And the best part...they are only $35 each. There are only 25 of them so hurry and pick yours out.

To view or purchase mini paintings click here.

New Images FINALLY Added to my Website

It's been 2 years since my website has been updated. Ugh...too long! Although I designed the website myself (but did not do the HTML) and I love the design, it isn't exactly easily updated. But I'm very proud of myself for figuring it out in Dreamweaver. So... new images from the past 2 years have now been added to my gallery pages. Yay! And I finally have links to my Etsy pages too.

Feels so good to accomplish this. It's been bugging me for a while. It was actually kind of fun once I got started. Nice to use that side of my brain for a change. But can anyone who works with Dreamweaver on a regular basis tell me why something as important as the Layers Palette is under the subheading "Others"? Makes no sense to me! Took me forever to find it.

Have a good weekend!

25 ways my life is different from a year ago

One year ago today my husband, one-year-old son and I began our cross-country journey from Los Angeles (population 9 million) to Asheville, NC (population 73,000).

For the past 20 years I’ve lived in some really big cities (Chicago, New York, Los Angeles). Everyday I’m amazed at how different my life is now in this small mountain community. I wasn’t sure what to expect after living the city life for so many years but I adjusted much better than I expected. I was definitely ready for the change. I feel really fortunate to have been able to pick-up and move the way we did and I look back on the packing, cross-country driving, house hunting/closing, unpacking and I feel exhausted just remembering it all. I think about the differences in my life everyday so I thought I’d post them...

I…

Am paying off a mortgage rather than paying rent to a crazy/mean landlady. (And our mortgage is less than half of what our L.A. rent used to be.)

Have a compost pile.

Spend most days outside hiking, swimming, painting with Sam and even (once) floating down the Green River in an inner tube (not with Sam).

Have met some amazing new friends…but miss my L.A. friends dearly.

Wear Teva sandals (which I used to think were hideous and still kinda do) everyday.

Have a studio with a door (actually 2 doors) instead of the dining room in the middle of the house.

Have painted more this year than the last few years combined.

Pay attention to the weather report.

Have realized that my hippie-crystal-stick deodorant is not effective in humid climates.

Know where my umbrella is.

Have a library card.

Miss having 2 NPR stations to choose from. We only get NPR after 3:00 p.m. here.

Know all of the neighbors on our street.

Am amazed at the never-ending list of things to do when you own a house.

Do not fear that our stroller will be stolen off our front porch (like it was in L.A.)

Am still amazed that during Asheville rush hour it only takes me an additional 5 minutes to get home.

Must order most art supplies online (rather than go to one of 4 art supply stores that used to be within a mile from my L.A. house).

Know what poison ivy looks like.

Have re-discovered how annoying mosquitoes are.

Am at least 5 hours (vs. 10 minutes) from the ocean.

Will probably go to the ocean more than I did in L.A.

Cannot see any movie that I want (apparently Asheville is not considered a “select city”).

Run into someone I know pretty much everywhere I go here.

Go to sleep listening to frogs and crickets.

Think to myself everyday “I love it here”.

New Paintings for Lily Moon Show

"too happy" - 5" x 5". My original plans were to paint something similar to an Echinacea flower. I love the way the petals grow downward. They're really beautiful but not as "perky" as most flowers. But once I started painting it took on a life of it's own. But at least you know what my inspiration was.

"can I come home now?" - 5" x 5". The leaves on the tree are metallic copper.

"nice to me" - 5" x 5". The pom poms are lightly "sprinkled" with metallic silver dots.

"with abandon" - 19" x 7" - details and mandalas painted with metallic copper. I started this painting in Los Angeles well over a year ago which explains the title. Once again, this scan is not very good. Something about the wood grain or brush strokes showing through really messes things up. I brought it out and finished it a couple of weeks ago. It was a tough piece to do because it is very glossy (which hurts my eyes after a while) and it was very difficult to get the colors to look accurate on this intense orange. I think that's why I abandoned it in the first place. I'm pleased with the result but man, it took a long time to get there!

All of these paintings will be available online the day of the show at 6:00 p.m. PST. Click here for more info on the show.

Lily Moon Show at Halogen Gallery this Weekend

I will have 4 new paintings for this show as well as some other previously seen paintings. My drawings and prints will be there too. If you live in the area please check it out. Click here for more info on the show and the gallery. Opening reception is this Friday from 6-10 p.m.

I will post the new work soon.

Bat!

Okay, it has been a crazy 24 hours. Last night my husband heard a rustling behind our blinds in our bedroom and he went to investigate and a bat flew out! I was pretty much already asleep when this happened and woke up to my husband's strange-sounding voice saying "Oh my god!!" Well, needless to say I didn't go back to sleep for a while. We ended up sleeping on an air mattress in my studio. We couldn't find the bat last night but my husband found it this morning under one of the flaps of the blind. It was really creepy looking. We tried to capture it but it got away and I let out a scream that I don't think I've ever heard before. Blood-curdling, I would call it. Anyway, animal control came out to get it this morning. Phew! Crazy night. We are definitely country folk now.

I wish I had gotten a picture of it for the post but every time I think of it I get chills so maybe it's a good thing that I'm sparing all of you.

Best Birthday Ever!

My birthday was last week and we took a trip to Lake Lure, NC to celebrate on Friday. It was so beautiful and only 45 minutes from where we live. We swam in the lake surrounded by mountains and then we rented a canoe and ate lunch on the water. It was so peaceful and beautiful and I felt so grateful to have the life that I have. I've been a bit introspective since then. I'm trying to come up with some new paintings for a Seattle show in August but I'm having a hard time. I've just been enjoying the lazy summer and my birthday week.

Hope you're all having a wonderful weekend.

My Pillows at Urban Outfitters

Pillows featuring my painting titled "mylo" are now at Urban Oufitters. I don't think they're being sold online yet but they are definitely in stores. Yay! The color is different from my original image but the pillow has a nice distressed look to it that I really like. They measure 18" x 18" and are solid green on the back. I love the tag with my name on it on the back! Unfortunately, we don't have a store here in Asheville so if you see them in stores let me know what you think.

Why doesn't every town have one of these?

Long view of Pisgah Brewing Company. It's even bigger than this.

Sam with his friend Grey

Ian enjoying a beer while Sam enjoys some milk.

Believe it or not the pictures above are of a bar! It's a local brewery called Pisgah Brewing Company and it's about 15 minutes from us. We've been meeting our friends there every Thursday evening for the past few weeks. It's kind of an indoor/outdoor bar with live music and a firepit. But just behind the bar is a huge lawn (a part of the bar) with a creek and a bridge. Sitting outside on a beautiful evening, drinking great beer with your kids running around. You can also bring your own food. Brilliant!

"joy"

"only slightly less than happy" (sorry, I could not get a good scan of this image because of the wood grain)

Congratulations Kelly & Peter!!

"finally found you"

A couple of weekends ago I went back to Los Angeles (my old stomping ground) for the wedding of my dear friend Kelly. It was an amazing and beautiful wedding and you could just feel the love in the air. The way they looked at each other...really beautiful. This painting was my wedding gift to them.

Congratulations to Kelly & Peter!!! I am sooooooo happy for both of you.

My Prints at SCOUT

I am pleased to announce that my prints are now being sold at SCOUT in Louisville, KY. The store looks very cool from the website. I might just have to stop in on our way to Ohio one of these days. If you live in that area you should check it out.

Happy Father's Day!

Today at the lake

Sam painting a Father's Day card for Papa

About a month ago in Cincinnati

Papa & Sam (at 5 weeks old)

We're having a wonderful Father's Day so far. Sam and I woke up early (well, Sam woke up early) and we walked to the store to get breakfast stuff and we cooked Ian a big breakfast. I'm feeling very fortunate to have such a great husband who is an amazing father. Sam will turn 2 in a couple of weeks and the time is flying by. Thought I'd share some pics...

Happy Father's Day!!
